Notes
Never in a million years did I expect to write Ouran fanfic, but here I am. It has also been a million years since I watched/read the series, but. I had to get this out of my system.
Written for fic_promptly, using the prompt 'thrown off-balance by an unexpected question'
“Hey, Kaoru, can I talk to you for a minute?”
Hikaru and Kaoru looked up from where they had been keeping themselves busy teasing Tamaki, making his and Haruhi’s baby giggle at his over-the-top reactions.
Kaoru looked up. Hikaru seemed curious, but got a lapful of baby to distract him, Tamaki equally occupied by her giggles. “Yeah, sure.”
Getting off the green grass in their back yard, he followed her to the kitchen that was currently empty.
Haruhi closed the door behind her.
“Sneaking around at your kid’s birthday party? What’s so important that we gotta hide?”
Haruhi leaned against the kitchen island Kaoru had taken the chance to jump up on, dangling his legs. “Do you like guys?”
Kaoru froze.
“Uh.” He stared at her with wide eyes. “Why’re you asking?”
“You’ve been looking at Mori all afternoon,” she said. “It’s not exactly subtle. Not even I could miss it.”
Kaoru covered his face with his hands, back meeting the stone countertop as he dropped down to lie on it. He groaned quietly, his ears red. “D’you think he noticed?”
Haruhi heaved herself up on the counter to sit next to him, humming. “I don’t know. If you like him you should tell him though.”
Kaoru lowered his hands just enough to uncover his eyes, peering up at her. “He wants a family though.”
“Do you?”
Kaoru squeezed his eyes closed, the way the visible parts of his face moved clear that he was grimacing behind his hands. “I don’t know. Maybe.”
Haruhi dropped down to lie beside him. “There’s more than one way to make a family, you know.”
She could hear Kaoru kick the counter door with his heel. “You know, I haven’t even told Hikaru that I like Mori, and you figure it out in like five minutes flat. I’m kinda thrown for a loop here.”
Haruhi huffed a quiet laugh. “Considering how many times all of you’ve done that with your rich-people stuff, I think I deserve to get a bit even."
Kaoru grinned at her, cheeks still red. “I guess you do.”
They both jumped out of their skin as the door opened, Tamaki’s voice carrying through the room. “I’m gonna get you a bottle riiight now, okay~!” He came to a stop in the doorway, crying baby in his arms. “What are you doing?”
Kaoru slipped off the counter, grin on his face. “Stealing your wife,” he teased as he sauntered past him. Tamaki gasped, while Haruhi rolled her eyes.
“Just talking.” She picked their daughter out of Tamaki’s arms, pressing a kiss to her forehead before standing up on the tip of her toes to kiss Tamaki on the lips. “I guess it’s time for her dinner.”
“Mmhm!” Tamaki preened at her attention, quick to shower her with kisses before heading for the fridge. “I didn’t know this is where you went. What were you talking about?”
“Nunya,” Kaoru said as he opened the door that had slipped shut behind Tamaki. “Thank you though, Haruhi. I’ll tell you if and how it goes.”
“Of course.” Haruhi smiled at him. She didn’t blame him for needing more time. But considering the target of his affection was Mori, he would be fine either way.
She had a feeling everything would be okay.
